A new CEO was challenged with a situation where two of the company's scientific founders held key positions in the firm. These people were very bright and both had strong personalities. The downfall of the founders was that they distrusted the current management. The result was the CEO and executives were constantly being micromanaged, reducing the effectiveness of the executive team. The CEO obtained help from an executive coach and learned ways to build trust and credibility with the two founders and the board to ease the tense situation. A CEO of a rapidly growing pharmaceutical firm needed to prepare for an IPO in 18 months by gradually transitioning from a VC to a public board structure. At the same time, the CEO was challenged with redesigning the corporate structure and identifying a vice president of human resources. This person sought out coaching advice to help manage this transition. The result was that the CEO was better able to identify and place the right person for the HR role and he is creating a culture that will be able to sustain growth and weather the challenges of a rapidly growing firm. |
